- Who We Are
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED DISCIPLINE?
Road. Although I'm more noted for my successes on the velodrome and in TTs. I've raced XC at a good level back in Aus too.
HOW LONG ARE YOU ON THE BIKE?
Er... On and off since I was 8 y/o, so about 25 years! I went AWOL from the sport for 12 years, but it drew me back in!
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN CYCLING?
Both parents raced and represented GB at the World Championships in the 1960s, so I followed suit. Something in the genes, I guess...
ACHIEVEMENTS ON THE BIKE:
World Champion Pro Pursuit, 19 times National Champion including British National Pro RR Champion, World Competition Record holder (5000m), 2 times Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Bronze medallist World Pro
Pursuit, 4th place Olympic Games Individual Pusuit, 10mile TT Competition Record Holder... there's a few more decent results, but I don't want to bore you!
WHAT TEAMS HAVE YOU REPRESENTED?
Great Britain, England, ADR (with Lemond, Museeuw, Plankaert), Tulip Computers (with Pieper, Van der Poel), New South Wales Institute of Sport,Team Brite, Team Mens Health, Metaltek-Kuota, Sportgrub-Kuota.
WHAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE NEW TO CYCLING?
Get a power-meter if you don't already have one, and a coach to disseminate your data! Work hard AND smart. Never give up.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE A GREAT CYCLIST?
Intelligence, tactical awareness, physical attributes, determination, quiet but unflinching confidence... and a great sense of humour!
